In sickness and in health

“We all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast, lunch, and tea.”

~ Vegemite jingle

For the past three days I’ve been laid low with a horrible stomach bug. Monday morning I woke up feeling slightly nauseous, but I thought I was well enough to go to work.

Big mistake.

You truly haven’t made a workplace your own until you’ve spent most of a morning in the bathroom throwing up last night’s dinner. It’s even better if you can ‘christen’ two bathrooms on two different levels of the building. Then you’re really staking your claim.

I somehow managed to survive the taxi trip back home without spoiling the upholstery and then spent the rest of the day either in bed or slumped on the bathroom floor.

While I’d love to share with you all the gory details to garner extra sympathy, no one really needs to hear about the (literal) ins and outs of a three-day bout of food poisoning. Suffice it say that it hasn’t been a great start to the week.

Luckily for me a care package from home containing Vegemite had arrived in the mail the week before. For the non-Aussies reading, Vegemite is a dark brown paste made from a yeast and vegetable extract used as a spread on bread or toast.

Vegemite has been there for me through countless illnesses, several break ups and the odd bout of homesickness while overseas. It’s definite comfort food and I’m so glad it arrived before I got sick and not afterwards.

Yesterday (just like in the jingle) I had vegemite on toast for breakfast, lunch and tea. And while I’m not sure if it’s given me rosy cheeks, it’s been the only food I’ve been able to keep down. This has certainly made me feel a bit better. That and the probiotics my host-mum gave me.

Getting sick is often an unfortunate side effect of having wonderful overseas adventures. I’ve had Bali Belly in Indonesia (once) and Montezuma’s Revenge in Mexico (multiple times). I’m not sure what they call it here (the Honduran Hurl?) but it certainly hit me for six.

I’m feeling pretty well recovered today, but as weak as a kitten. A few more vegemite sandwiches and I’m sure I’ll be back to my usual self in no time.

‘Honduran Hurl’ has a lovely sound to it Em! Wonderful to see you on the mend. You should send your post to Kraft – It may make you famous – ‘Vegemite saves the day when the Honduran Hurl strikes!’. Take care girl. XXX

I’m pleased I’m on the mend too! I thought your idea of sending my post to Kraft was cute, so I flicked them a quick feedback email this afternoon. And they’ve already sent me a response back!

Love it Em. Ask them to send you a box of tubes! 🙂 Are you sure you didn’t eat the lamb cutlets again?

Positive. I learnt my lesson the hard way last time. No ordering the lamb in countries with no sheep!
