About

The short version:

Travel-loving, Spanish-studying Australian who went on an overseas adventure to Honduras and beyond.

The long version:

My friends call me Em and you can too. I normally live in Canberra, but in February 2013 I completed an AFS Intercultural Programs Semester Volunteer Abroad program to Honduras. I volunteered for UNICEF, working with their Communication team.

Following my volunteer work in Honduras, I met Vic (one of my BFFs) in Ecuador and we did a six-week backpacking trip through several South American locations.

My love affair with all things Latino began in 1999 when I completed two school assignments, one on Latin American Liberation Theology, and one on Augusto Boal, Brazilian founder of the Theatre of the Oppressed.

This new interest developed into an 11-month AFS High School Exchange to Brazil in 2000, followed by five years of Spanish study at university (including a semester university exchange to Puebla, Mexico in 2005) and then writing an Honours thesis in Spanish about the ‘narcocorrido’ in 2006.

Since leaving uni I’ve tried to maintain my Spanish skills by attending weekly conversation groups or classes. I was very excited about being able to immerse myself in a Spanish-speaking country again. Even more exciting was visiting my Mexican friends on the way to Honduras and my Brazilian host family on the way home.

A little bit about why I did what I did can be found in this post:
Seeing the world with purpose

My current hobbies and interests include dragon boating, studying Spanish, reading and, of course, travelling.

I’ve always wanted to go to Honduras and do mission work down there. Spent the last three years in Asia and now all I want to do is travel. Beautiful site!

The travel bug is a hard one to shake, that’s for sure. 🙂 I haven’t made it further north than Bali in Asia yet, but I’m looking forward to exploring more one day.

Well Bali is one place I haven’t been in Asia! The world is crazy. The more you see the more there is to see. Thanks for your reply. Have a wonderful day!

Awww, thanks Sheila. Very kind of you to put me forward. Sorry I’m a bit late to respond to this. I somehow missed your comment in the flurry of blog activity I received after being freshly pressed. Thanks again!
